UCONN vs South Carolina
In college women's basketball one team has dominated for many years. That team is the Connecticut Huskies. Under coach Geno Auriemma they have won 10 NCAA championship, including winning the last 3 years. Most team's successes comes from recruiting. Auriemma has been able to do that over the years. A lot of his players that he has coached have gone on and had success in the WNBA as well, including Rebecca Lobo, Swinn Cash and Sue Bird.
In my opinion, they are like the Patriots of Women's basketball. They rarely lose. In the past 3 seasons alone they have won 100 games and have only lost once. Whether or not you like them or not, that's very impressive. They always have a lot of talent. I remember when BYU went to the Sweet 16 and they had to play Connecticut. Hamson and Bailey stayed with them in the first half but in the second half, unfortunately the Huskies took over.
It's definitely going to be an interesting game tonight as they play a talented South Carolina team. It's going to be the battle of the undefeated teams. Connecticut is 20-0 and South Carolina is 21-0. South Carolina has the advantage at home but Connecticut has shown that everyone on the team is capable at shooting at a high level. In their first game of the season, UCONN's five starters all scored in double figures. The standout is Breanna Stewart. She pretty much do everything on the floor when she is having a hot night. She can block, score, pass, rebound which is ideally you want in a basketball player. She definitely will be a high draft pick in the WNBA.
On the other side here's a South Carolina team coached under Dawn Staley. Here's a coach who started her playing career as a player at Virginia, where she led them to 3 Final Fours and 1 Championship. She was the US Olympian team when Auriemma was an assistant at the time in Australia. So this is going to be a fun rivalry between them.
Staley became head coach in 2008. In the first couple of years the Gamecocks struggled but then continually improved and got better and now they are in the elite group of women's basketball. The last four years they have gone to the NCAA Tournament, with going all the way to the Final Four in the 2014-2015 season. The Gamecocks are going to be expecting A'ja Wilson to have another good game. She's been one of the most consistent players on the team overall and it would be nice for them to upset the #1 UCONN.
